Beats a calculator every time
Computer calculators have always been one of those funny idiosyncrasies of interface design, giving you onscreen keypads that looked like the desk calculators of yore, but usually without even having a tape. What are you going to do, click on the numbers with your mouse? It never made any sense.
Soulver is different.
Its the perfect blend of human, natural language description and computer-based calculation. Its far more natural and sensible than either a calculator with a big clickable keypad or a spreadsheet, not binding you into either metaphor when youre trying to work through a multi-step question of just get some simple math done. Youll still need a spreadsheet if you have big tables of data, but most of us dont work with that kind of data on an everyday basis, and for the numbers that actually show up in our lives, whether its figuring out a price or idly wondering how long it will take Voyager 2 to travel a light year, Soulver is an excellent tool.
If you like it, note that there are iPad and iPhone versions too.
